A Modern Workspace for Cutting-Edge Science Technology, Innovation and Industry.

The Extreme Photonics Applications Centre (EPAC) at STFC's Harwell campus was designed to foster innovation and collaboration among scientists, researchers, universities, schools, and industry partners. The project involved a complete fit-out of the building, transforming it into a state-of-the-art workspace that would support the cutting-edge research conducted within its walls.

Having completed the initial building construction to a shell and core level, Overbury and Squaredot were successful in tendering as a collaborative team to further develop the initial client brief for the fit out of all the operational offices and support areas within the facility. This was then translated into a coordinated concept & scheme design, followed by technical detail to deliver the complete turnkey project. The design focused on a philosophy of creating a dynamic, flexible and sociable environment across 2 principle creative office floors, that challenged traditional office concepts.

The EPAC features semi-enclosed booths for private discussions, quiet rooms for focused work, and flexible workstations with variable-sized clusters to encourage team collaboration. Additionally, the space includes lounge areas, team town hall spaces, and an outdoor terrace for relaxation and informal gatherings.

Throughout the process, Squaredot addressed the requirements for general wellbeing, as well as the potential impact for neurodiverse users. Through sensitive planning, planting and choices of both work and rest facilities, the overall look and feel, materials and finishes were carefully developed to engender a sense of freshness and stimulation for all users.

Collaborating with the client and internal project team led to refining the brief and taking the design development through a fast-track iterative process necessary to support the critical programme & deliver the project on time and on budget.

The EPAC project was completed successfully, and the building is now being used as a benchmark for future workplaces within the STFC campus. The project demonstrates how innovative design can create a workspace that not only supports research but also enhances the overall employee experience.
