At Squaredot, we firmly believe in fostering a work environment that celebrates and supports neurodiversity, not just in our own offices but in the workspaces we create for our clients. We understand that some individuals may be genetically wired to experience their surroundings differently, and we strive to create spaces that cater to these variations.
One common misconception is that neurodiverse people solely require calming environments. In reality, some individuals thrive with increased stimulation to regulate their nervous system. This is why user engagement is paramount in our design process. We don't just design for people with disabilities, we design with them in mind, ensuring we understand their unique needs.
Our approach focuses on the lived experiences of people in the workplace. We explore how the environment can promote inclusivity, leading to a more productive and effective work experience for all. This valuable process allows individuals to choose the level of stimulation and social interaction that best suits them.
Neurodiversity Celebration Week: A Time to Reflect
This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week, a cause championed by Squaredot's Paul Tupman, Studio Lead and Senior Designer. Paul, along with many others across the UK, is dedicated to raising awareness about neurodiversity, both personally and professionally.
Paul comments, “Neurodiversity encompasses the natural variations in how people think, interact with others, and experience the world around them. These variations can sometimes present challenges, but it's important to remember that these differences are not disabilities – they are unique strengths that contribute to the richness of the human experience.”
The Power of Neurodiversity in the Workplace
Research by the Autism at Work programme at JP Morgan Chase demonstrates the power of neurodiversity in the workplace. Their findings show that autistic employees can be 92% more productive than their neurotypical counterparts. Neurodivergent individuals often possess exceptional problem-solving skills, remarkable creativity, and a range of other valuable talents.
However, a 2023 report by City & Guilds revealed a concerning statistic: 32% of neurodivergent individuals felt uncomfortable disclosing their neurodiversity at work. This highlights the crucial need to separate neurodiversity from disability.
Building a More Inclusive Future
At Squaredot, we celebrate the unique qualities that everyone brings to the table. We believe in creating a work environment where everyone feels supported, valued, and truly at home. It is important to recognise neurodiversity and build a world that thrives on its differences, whilst committing as designers to create spaces that empower everyone to succeed.
